Friendster. Myspace. Facebook. LinkedIn. Most likely, you belong to at least one of these (three for me).
The whole social media/social networking frenzy started with Friendster in 2002. Eventually, several eUniverse employees realized the potential of Friendster and developed Myspace. Now, the social media king (based on its Alexa ranking), Myspace is more than 100 million members strong and averaging an additional 230,000 new signups each day, proving the whole social media is continuing to expand.
Even with the industry expanding, could social media be reaching a revenue plateau? Or is there even such a thing as a revenue plateau when it comes to the social media kingdom?
Social media is forecasted to gross $1.474 billion in 2009, up 37.4 percent from 2008. Unfortunately, this expansion is nothing compared to the 60.8 percent increase from 2007 to 2008, or the 141.7 percent increase between 2006 and 2007.

Latest news from the home front is that Nokia and MTV are working together on a documentary covering the 2008 Cannes Young Lions Film Competition. That’s pretty cool (as is this fake logo…that’s right, I’m a copywriter and I know enough to be dangerous on Photoshop!) I don’t remember this kind of thing going on in my hey day…but enough about me. Their brief was to “produce a 60 second viral video showing kids having fun while having a low impact on the environment. NO EXPLICIT ENVIRONMENTAL MESSAGE.” Oh, that’s the kind of vagueness I remember with the Student One Show competitions.
So, here’s the skinny -

I think that the number one mistake I run across with clients and their Web sites is that they never think beyond SEO. Their whole “marketing” strategy (if they have one at all) is getting their site to number one in the search. If they’re a specialty market, that might not be so difficult. For instance, if you sell Labradoodles, getting to the top might not be as complicated. But if you sell cars, that’s a whole other story.
This is where your marketing strategy comes in… A marketing strategy is a plan for you to reach out to your customers, your clients or patrons. A marketing strategy involves you researching your market. Who are your customers? What do they want from you, and what does it take to reach them? And more importantly, what search engine do they use? Most people just assume that their customers use Google, and that’s that… but, in fact, there are other search engines and portals out there and it’s possible your clients come in through one of those. This is important because.............

Independence… What a Concept!
July 4th has always been my favorite holiday because it celebrates one of my favorite things. America.
In my mind, it has always stood out as the most successful brand launches of all time. Two-hundred and thirty-two years young this Friday and still going strong. The first of it’s kind. The brand that all others are measured by. At the heart of it’s success? Creative minds. Think about this while you enjoy your barbecue and beers. The founding fathers had to do some pretty fancy footwork to get a lot of people on-side with what they were trying to sell in. Sure they were the smartest guys in the room, but the room was a lot smaller back then. All they had was an idea and not much else in their favor, especially the fact that no one had ever successfully been able to get the British to buy into an exit strategy. The odds of winning this account was nil. Here’s how I see it:
The Concept:
Independence. Freedom. Democracy. The British way just isn’t working for us anymore. They don’t respect us. or take us seriously and we don’t have any rights. We complain, They don’t listen. We put up a stink, they raise taxes. We want to be heard, they still don’t listen. If we ask them to leave, they won’t. If we say that we’re leaving, they won’t let us go. Looks like we’re going to have to take matters into our own hands and do it all ourselves…
The Challenges:
No money, not much support, no suppliers, no hope of defeating the big guys who hadn’t lost an account yet, if we play by the rules. Obstacles? Too many to even consider. Downsides: execution for treason, sedition, mutiny, unlawful assembly and will be hated by both the British and our fellow colonists. Are we sure we really want to do this?
The Competition:.........

We all know how the agressive photo spies known as the paparrazi have creating a booming business by distributing sought-after pictures of celebrities (often in uncomfortable positions) to large media outlets. Now it seems that the paparrazi have a new target, automobiles.
In a recent press release, I learned that auto companies go to great lengths to keep the press from seeing their newest designs before they can be debuted at a car show. While celebrites.............

Chalk one up for tradition. Personal communication is still unbeatable WOM…offline WOM is more prevalent, positive and credible than online buzz.
First of all, word-of-mouth conversations that take place in person and over the phone are far more prevalent than those online. About 3.5 billion US WOM conversations occur daily. Offline WOM accounts for 92 percent of these. Offline is the predominant mode of WOM across all age groups.
And not only is it more prevalent, face-to-face communication is more:
- Positive in tone
- Likely to be judged “highly credible”
- Likely to lead to strong purchase intent than online talk
…………………
I’ll believe it when I see you…
Although the credibility gap may be because online communications often occur between people who don’t know each other very well, the gap exists even....................

Sorry, you won’t find any hidden code buried in this image that will lead you to fame or fortune, but for those video enthusiasts who grow by the numbers every day, I do hope that you find this blog helpful.
I by no means consider myself an expert when it comes to video, but as we find with most things we do on a regular basis there are better and more effecient ways to do things.
As American families pick up the camcorders, they also find themselves piling up the mini-dv tapes or mini dvd discs by the dozen. I find myself in that same group, but who wants to spend hours going back through years of tapes to find one particular moment in their lives or children’s lives that they would love to see again?
That’s where the beauty of creating DVDs with chapters comes in. Though capturing all those tapes into your computer just to create your own DVD may take a lot of time, believe me it will be well worth it in the long run. You’ll be able to make copies for your family when your done and find that you can now use the chapter menus you have created on your own personal DVD to go straight to that memorable moment without dying of old age by the time you find it.
I myself use................

Now… this is cool. Recently in Germany, the company Cinescent used their technology in theaters. Imagine this. You’re hanging out waiting for your movie to start and you’re watching all those ads that come on before the previews. You see an ad that is simply a beach scene with no VO but all of a sudden…

Locally, I see a ton of personal vehicles used for the purpose of advertising. And trust me, companies will pay because your car will reach exposure beyond possible outlets a local company may be able to go.
Unfortunately, since I was driving myself, I didn’t get a picture of the exact car that I saw, but this person went above and beyond just slapping an ad about the company on her car, she was marketing herself as the brand to get your company noticed.
At quick glance, not only would she advertise your company / product on her car, she would give you word of mouth - talk to people in coffee shops, mention you while out shopping, even spread around your business card in drop boxes at area businesses she would visit.
What stood out was she never mentioned....................

There is no doubt that online marketing and content are heavily influenced by social media. When you create content specifically for the purpose of popularity on social sites, well, the results can boost your traffic enormously!
